Lessons In Loaf With Year 3

Year 3 carried out a full-day workshop called ‘Lessons in Loaf’, linked to their topic on the Stone Age. They learned how to make bread from flour. During the workshop, the children began by breaking the ears of wheat off the stalks and threshing them in a pillowcase. Then they used a fan to separate the wheat from the chaff – this is called winnowing. Next, the wheat seeds were ground to make whole wheat flour then added to the other ingredients which included salt, yeast, and warm water.
The children had to work carefully as a team to ensure everything was measured correctly. Then things got messy as all the children helped to mix and knead the dough. After the dough had risen the children got creative, shaping and decorating their individual bread buns ready for the oven.
