Welcome to the Debate Mate Page

The Year 5 Debate Mate members took part in their first debating competition as part of the Urban Debate League. They had the opportunity to debate with teams from other local schools, with motions including ‘This house would ban keeping pets’. The children have been learning debating skills as part of the after school club and this was their first chance to use those skills outside of the club. They did fantastically well and won 4 out of the 6 debates entered. We will find out the ranking of Orchard Primary in relation to other schools from across the country in the coming weeks. Well done to all of the children involved!

For the second year in a row, Orchard has hosted the Debate Mate Urban Debate League which saw nine schools from East London come to debate two very contentious topics. Should the monarchy be abolished? Should we ban cars in cities? The children were all very confident and received excellent feedback from the judges. We are now awaiting the announcement to see if we have made it through to the next round of the competition.

12 children from Year 5 went to the Debate Mate launch in Westminster as part of the debating competition that Orchard are taking part in. It is a great opportunity to become more articulate and confident when speaking. The children will be trained in the art of debating by an experienced university student and then they will go onto competitions against schools from Hackney. There will also be a final competition against all the schools in London! We wish them the best of luck.
